I was enthralled by the sharp military rhythm of your snare, ever-steady behind the violins’ insane runs,
the low rumble of your timpani as it rose in thrilling crescendo,
the sleigh bell's cheery jingle, the glock's bright melody.
I was enthralled by your nimble hands and their delicate grace,
your striking, dark-clothed profile against the red curtain,
your look of intent concentration as you awaited the Maestro's cue.
(But listen - I wasn't enthralled by you.)
See –
I was drawn to the enthusiasm you brought to every jam session,
the way your eyes lit up when we dropped down for your solo,
the wild joy on your face when we hit fortissimo and cruised, cruised long on that euphoric high.
I was drawn to that charisma as to a flame,
that laid-back confidence as to a calm ocean,
that delight in what you created as to the most magnificent of storms.
(But see - I wasn't drawn to you.)
You know –
I fell in love with that easy grace in your every movement.
that infectious laugh that never failed to draw a smile,
that feeling of connection when we meshed more perfectly than I'd ever thought possible.
I fell in love with your humour, your warmth, your passion,
your love for our art, our ephemeral creations,
your unwavering trust in what you and I, what we could do.
(And you know - somewhere along the way, I think I fell in love with you.)
